How to Support the Council-of-Elrond

The Council-of-Elrond relies heavily on donations from it's members to help pay the bills. These bills include the monthly server bill, yearly domain name registration, yearly renewal of the vbulletin license, and some other occasional costs. For anyone that doesn't know, this community used to call another site, Imladris, home. In late August, 2002, that site was closed without warning. When attempts to contact the owner went unanswered, Melkor took it upon himself to give us a new home so all of us wouldn't continue to wander the net lonely and confused. Melkor isn't a rich guy. He's a regular guy with a regular job with the same bills that everyone else has. Donations made by the community are the only way this site can continue to exist. Following are different ways in which you can help.

Monetary Donations

You can make monetary donations using the Amazon Honor system, PayPal, or by money order.

Amazon Honor System

Donations can be made by credit card. You choose how much you want to donate. They will accept donations for as little as $1. The person making a donation is not charged any fees. The person receiving a payment is assessed 5% of the total payment per transaction plus 19 cents. You can click on the button here, or choose the one located on the front page.

PayPal

You can make donations with your credit card using PayPal. PayPal will not charge fees for donations made by users located within the US. If a transaction involves a currency conversion, it will be completed at a retail foreign exchange rate determined by PayPal, which is adjusted regularly based on market conditions. This exchange rate includes a 2.5% spread above the wholesale exchange rate at which PayPal obtains foreign currency, and the spread is retained by PayPal. The specific exchange rate that applies to your multiple currency transaction will be displayed at the time of the transaction.

Money Orders

You can send money orders in US dollars only to:

James Chapman
110 Dogwood Drive
Morganton NC 28655
USA

We cannot accept personal checks.

Tales from the Fiery Halls

Some of the authors who post in the Tales from Rivendell forum have put together a book of their poetry. They are going to donate all proceeds to the Council-of-Elrond to help with the finances. Information about the book and how to purchase it will be available in the very near future.

Council-of-Elrond Affiliate Accounts

All of the banner ads you see on the Council-of-Elrond are affiliate accounts. No money is made by clicking on the banners. Money is made by making purchases from the companies represented on the banner ads. Affiliate accounts include Allposters.com, Tolkientown.com and Amazon.com. Percentages made from sales are as follows:

Allposters.com

The C-o-E earns 25% on all purchases. In order for the C-o-E to get credit for the sale, you need to click on one of the Allposters.com banner ads, or go directly to the Council-of-Elrond.com Allposters.com Affilate Poster Store.

Tolkientown.com

In order for the C-o-E to get credit for the sale, you need to click on one of the Tolkientown banner ads, or go directly to the front page of Tolkientown.com using this link and browse to find what you want. The C-o-E affiliate information is embedded in the code. Percentages for Tolkientown are as follows:

17% Posters

16% US Edition Books and Audio Books

12% General Collectibles

11% Rings and other Jewelry

11% Maps, Wallscrolls, Bookmarks, Postcards

11% UK Edition Books and Audio Books

8% Toys and Games

5% Videos, DVDs, CDs

Amazon.com

The Amazon affiliate account include purchases made at Amazon.com, the ToysRUs.com store , the BabiesRUs store, the Target store, the Marshall Fields store, and the Office Depot stores located at Amazon.com. Percentages are as follows:

5% of the sale price for most Amazon.com Product purchases, and 2.5% of the sale price for most Marketplace Product purchases. An individual item link to an item sold by Amazon.com will earn an incremental premium of 2.5% in addition to the base referral rate if the purchase is a direct sale. A direct sale occurs when the customer adds the individually linked item to his or her shopping cart upon clicking through to Amazon.com. Additional qualifying Amazon.com items purchased during the same shopping session earn a referral fee of 5% (2.5% for qualifying Marketplace items). Please note that all items other than books, music, DVDs, Consumer Electronics (until Q2 2004), New Categories (Apparel, Sporting Goods, Gourmet Food and Jewelry) and videos are subject to a $10.00 maximum referral fee per item sold. They do not pay referral fees for gift certificates, Auctions items, zShops items, and Hotwire.com items.

In order to receive the incremental premium in addition to the base rate, you should find the product in one of the Amazon stores:

Get the ISBN/ASIN number for the product. What's an ASIN/ISBN? "ASIN" stands for "Amazon.com Standard Identification Number." Every item in the catalog (books, music, DVD, VHS, toys, consumer electronics, etc.) has a unique ASIN. The ASIN is the same as the ISBN for books. You can find an item's ASIN on its detail page. You can also find it in the page URL. When you have the number, come back here and enter the ISBN/ASIN in the appropriate box below, and click on submit. You will then be taken back to that item's page at Amazon where you can make your purchase.

ISBN/ASIN -- United States

ISBN/ASIN -- United Kingdom

ISBN/ASIN -- Canada

All donations, big and small, are greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry I'm not more computer-literate, but how do you make an Amazon purchase of more than one item using the procedure immediately above?

Actually, I was worried that when I started a purchase through one of Nyl's links and then added other itesm that I might mess up the Imladris donation. I orderd four books a few weeks ago--I hope that you go your share.

Here's how I "think" it works. Before we had the procedure where you could come back here and enter the AISN number to get us more percentage, we just clicked on the links with the embedded code for the C-o-E to go shopping. Once there, everything you added to your cart was credited to C-o-E. I would think that if you put the AISN for your first item in the box above, that you could continue to shop at Amazon and add things to your cart in the regular fashion, and that all of those purchases at that time would get the extra credit.

Is there any way to know for sure if purchases at Amazon got credited to CoE? I recently used your links above to order several books from them, but didn't see anything on my Shopping Cart page that indicated that CoE was getting a share. I sure hope it worked!

Nyl or whomever:

Is the information above still current?

I thought that the mailing address had changed.
