Sadly I didn't get Smaug off into the mail until yesterday, Hans. I had some problems at the end of last week. The Canadian postal system is rather dreadful, but I'd guess he'll turn up fairly soon.

Brilliant news!! YAY! Smaug has arrived!!

Brandy - thanks again for hosting him, and for all your great reports!

Eowyn, welcome to the Smaug thread!

I am really happy to see your lovely invitation, but I have to explain to you that you'll have to wait for a bit. There is a story to this. We once had a little pony (called Bill) which went round the world visiting lots of members of the COE, and one day we lost him and all his memories.

Because of this, Smaug usually prefers to visit members of these boards who have been around for a little while..... I am not talking years and years.... just to get to know them a little.

I hope you understand. In any case, there is quite a queue for Smaug, so I am sure you'll get to meet Smaug eventually.

In any case, he is always grateful for invitations, and I'll put you on the list!

Aha! I see that Hans and Smaug are currently online.

Greetings from Chicago!

I wasn't there for it, but it seems Hans got an email saying there was a problem with my delivery, so he went to the Circle Center (which he says now has an officious new name), where he found my American cousin Sparky at his job guarding the merchandise there.

Sparky D. Dragon

He told Sparky that there was a dragon in trouble, so they hurried over to some place called "Mail Services" (an inaccurate name if ever I heard one), where it seems that my delivery had been rejected. (I think it may have had to do with not being a private transport, or not delivering live dragons, or some such silliness.)

They hurried my well-wrapped box over to the safety of the Physics Dept. (a concept that some might find puzzling), where Sparky whipped out one of his knife-like claws and ripped open my (rather very) well-wrapped package.

My hero! I was very excited to be free!

(I could have freed myself, of course, but that would have spoiled the lovely travel-module Elwen provided for me.)

Sparky agreed that if I would calm down, he would accompany me in my future travels. Since visiting people is grand, but in between is very lonely, I calmed down right away. Mostly. I waved Brandy's flag a bit.

Everybody thought I was cute, but Janet thought that all that travel was dangerous (I agree it's much safer to fly on one's own), so she gave me a magic doll she called "Magic".

And Melodie gave me a rose.

We had more adventures in the department, but those will have to wait until I've had a rest. (I think I'm the only one left awake in the house.)

More later.

No, you're not. Some of us are just quieter than others.

One thing Smaug forgot to mention is that he's decided to join us on our upcoming trip to Iowa and environs.

Good night.

Great pictures, Hans! Good to see he's got a friend to keep him company. And a trip to Iowa on the cards, as well. This is going to be great!

Great pics, Hans! And we've got two dragons in the house now! That should make for some really fun adventures.

Wow... great arrival!

Really, what were they thinking?

They aren't delivering live dragons? What's the world coming to?

They love me!

Thanks, everybody. I do make a good subject for photos, don't I. (Hans tells me that they actually kept me in the mail room until Hans got there, but I think really they were afraid of me burning the mail or something.)

After we left the department office, we went to Hans' office, where I met Prof. Shriprakash, who is visiting from Mumbai. He told me his daughter is in school nearby, so he likes coming here in the summer, and it's not just the fancy office.

At the other end of the hall we met Maria, who for some reason goes by the name Cristina. She's a graduate student from Columbia.

She loves me.

I offered to go home with her, but after seeing my itinerary, she said that her children and being a graduate student wouldn't leave her enough time for me, but said she would reconsider after she graduated.

While she was in a state of awe reading over my travels, we got to meet Edgar, another graduate student from Columbia. Hans told us both Cristina and Edgar had been teaching assistants for him in the past, but we couldn't get them to tell us any secrets about him while he was in the room.

After that we left the building, and toured the campus a bit, but those pictures will have to wait. Hans says we're going to run some errands.

Cristina is Maria's middle name, Smaug.

And my secrets are all boring.

Good pics. Maria looks so sweet cuddling the dragons. You know, I don't think I ever imagined myself typing a sentence like that. Smaug is getting some major culture, meeting all kinds of graduate students and visiting professors. Coolness! Before it's all over, we'll have the widest-traveled, best educated dragon around.

So I'm back.

Here is the building Hans' office is in; it's in the ivy-covered corner closest. Hans said it's supposed to look (he thinks, he says) like a heavily twinned cubic crystal, but I don't know. I didn't see another building at all like it, larger or smaller.

Here's a picture of us at the center of campus. The two buildings closest are lecture centers A and B (right). The building you can see the top of on the left is the library, while the tall ugly building is 'University Hall', where the administration and many faculty offices are, though not science, math, or engineering.

We wanted a closeup.

Here's a Smaug-sized seat.

All I can say is, "WE DIDN'T DO IT!"

Here's a view of the Sears Tower from campus, where Mirdan took me almost a year ago.

Next we go for a ride.

After we'd toured campus for a while, we headed for the 'L'. I'm a veteran at riding it, you know. When we got there we met Marilyn. She called me Precious. Let it never be said the CTA only has unfriendly employees!

Never mind that Hans says she calls everybody 'precious', that he says that she said that that way she doesn't have to remember everybody's names (which would be hard). She let me (and Sparky) ride free!

When we got down to the platform, we thought we'd play in the sandbox, but it was locked.

So we went and sat on the bench instead.

When the 'L' train arrived, they ran it 'Express' for us.

So we got our own seat.

Watch this space.

Smaug, Marilyn even calls me 'precious'. She is a very friendly person, indeed.

Be that as it may, she let me ride free!

After our express ride on the 'L', we had time to stop at the Conservatory.

Word got out quickly that we were coming, and most of the local birds lined up for an audience.

We had some lovely chats. (I was told that the cages help protect the birds from some of the 'guests' who like to throw things.)

Then we went into the Desert Room.

For some reason, these cacti gave me the shivers. I thought maybe I could use a drink.

I was told that I could find some tequila here, but somebody must have been pulling my wing.

With one more stop to smell the flowers, we were on our way.

If I can, I'll post more pictures before we go, but we'll see. (I'm packed, but I'm not sure about the people.)

After the Conservatory, we walked through the park to Hans' house. He said he needed to mow the grass before it rained (it didn't). I volunteered to help, but all I saw was weeds. He insisted there was grass somewhere.

So Sparky went to look for ears of sweet corn to roast, but there wasn't any. (We warmed it up enough to tassel, though.)

After watching Hans mow, we needed a respite on the balcony, while Hans smoked a cigar.

Then Sparky and I got to work getting ready to post the first batch of pictures.

Then we went down into the library, where we met the local dragon. He's from Korea, and Hans' brother brought him home in his luggage. (My Korean is rusty, so I didn't catch his name.)

He let me ring his bell. Cool.

We then met the local cat, named Gypsy, who decided we (like most things besides tuna, cheese, and lint) weren't food and decided to ignore us. Or nap due to the excitement, it's hard to tell.

After we looked over the library, Sparky found a good book to read, and we took turns reading through the night.

That was our Thursday. We helped Hans run some errands on Friday, which we'll see eventually, but today (Saturday) we've been packing and resting for the upcoming journey. (And Hans keeps saying he's too busy to take pictures. Spoilsport.)

On Friday, we went with Hans on some errands, including getting the van checked for the journey.

For that we went to Avery's, but Avery is retired and lives on the farm in Tennessee, so his brother Jerry (on my right) runs it now. I went inside to meet the mechanics.

Jerry was short-handed Friday, so I lent him a hand.

Here we've rolled the van out of the bay.

Then I went over to see what Sparky was up to. He found a truck in my favorite color.

Alas, there were no keys in it.

Hans says we're making too much noise and keeping him up and he's got to drive tomorrow, so I suppose it's bedtime.

Here's some info on the truck. It seems there's an antique car and truck show soon. No time to look for it though.

More later, eventually.
