Tolkien-related songs
I know that all of us have songs which may remind us of scenes, characters, etc. in Tolkien's works, but beyond those -- there are songs out there which specifically refer to Tolkien's works.
I thought it might be nice to have a thread where people could post songs/artists which are Tolkien-related. Off the top of my head, I know that Led Zeppelin has several songs which mention ringwraiths, etc. ( Don't remember which ones exactly -- Gorbag, help?!).....There's a hot young bluegrass group which has recorded an instrumental called, "The House of Tom Bombadil," which seems quite appropriate for Bombadil's house, IMO -- their name is Nickel Creek (they've had several #1's on the country charts). Their mandolin player, Chris Thiele (sp?) has a solo album titled, "Not all who wander are lost," and it also has a couple songs within it referring to Tolkien's works. Didn't Enya have a song which referred to Imladris? Anything else? I'm sure there are loads more out there.

In Jeff Buckley's song "Yard of Blonde Girls" he sings of a 'tree of white'.
No idea if this is deliberate... it's probably not, but I always think of Tolkien when I hear it ![]() |

There´s a heavy metal band called Blind Guradian who has an album called "Nightfall in Middle-earth" with Tolkien songs. There´s also a deathmetal band called "Summoning" wiht CDs like "Dol Guldur", "Minas Morgul" and "Lugburtz"
An album that I like is Bob CAtley´s "Middle-earth". It´s some sort om pomp-rock, a little like meatloaf. I recommend it to people who like melodic rock with a good mix of keyboards and guitars. Oh, and I think Enya has a song called "Lothlorien"

I must get round to listening to BC's Middle Earth some time.
Here's the lyrics for the Led Zep songs Eriol mentioned above. Some people say that Stairway to Heaven and No Quarter also have Tolkien references but Ive never noticed them. Quote:

Smash Mouth have a song called All Star.. It appeared in Shrek, and apparently in Digimon. I love this song, but sometimes it just refuses to leave me alone

Great Lyrics Morm.
![]() While Ramble On is clearly based on LOTR.. (Robert Plant had just finished reading it), The Battle of Evermore was actually based on the old Celtic myths and battles according to Plant. He obviously threw in a few references from Tolkien as they sounded good. And Misty Mountain Hop.... apart from the title, is actually all about getting busted by the police in a park while smoking dope back in the Seventies. ![]() Pipe Weed anyone?

Sorry man, I couldn't wait.
Along with the other two songs Mormegil mentioned that feel like Tolkien, Stairway To Heaven and No Quarter, I always think of Middle-earth when I hear Going To California.

There is an album by David Arkenstone called "Music Inspired by Middle Earth". I highly recommend it.
A few of the songs are: The Road to Rivendell Moria Lothlorien The Riders of Rohan Arwen and Aragorn The Grey Havens

Depends on your musical taste.
As I allready wrote in the BG thread yesterday I was at a Bling Guardian concert here in vienna. They are playing music about fantasy and more than 50% dedicated to middle earth. They have one album called "Nightfall on middle earth" completely dealing with stories from the Silmarillion. I would recommend that to anybody who likes fast Metal. Their music is getting more complex every album and I by myself have problems with their latest one, but I still would say they make the best Tolkien related music I know. On the other hand, many people back on Imladris checked them out (due to people like me recomending them ) and just didn't liked it. Called them "cheesy" and whatever. |

I thought in Imladris there was a Thread Titled Music that reminds you of LOTR...but I can't find it here!! Well, of course, besides Howard Shore's Angle Side Side Kicking score what music reminds you of or is about LOTR! Can I create this here mods?!
You can move it or what not...But here's my main question... HAS ANYONE HEARD OF BLIND GUARDIAN!? Last edited by HessiferMan : 10-20-2002 at 07:29 PM. |

On one of Enya's albums (i can't remember what it's called!) there's a track called Lothlorien. I guess that's why they made her do " May it be".

A prog rock band called Amon-Ra has an instrumental called "The Story Of Beren And Luthien". Since I used to post (at Imladris too) by the name of Beren Erchamion, I was intrigued to check it out. It's a very good song, and I've been considering buying the album.

"Misty Mountain Hop" makes me laugh. I mean, I know Tolkien has marketing power, but jeesh!
I have to say that I like Enya's "Lothlorien" a lot more than Howard Shore's. Not that there's anything wrong with his, but Enya's...My goodness. I like her for being mellow New Age stuff, and I don't expect much from her. But her "Lothlorien" track is the most emotionally moving instrumental piece I have ever heard. The very first time I heard it, the melody repeated itself in my head over and over until I needed to listen to it again just to get it out. I can't describe what it is about this song; it captures the tragedy, that's right the tragedy of Lothlorien perfectly. I think of a blurry oil painting of Lorien when I hear it. The music makes me remember each time that Lothlorien has faded and the most beautiful realm on earth is gone. I haven't listened to it in a long time because the last time I did I broke down and cried, it moved me so much. Does anyone else have this reaction to it or am I just dorky? ![]() |

Now I'm going to have to buy a bunch of albums... I've been playing Bob Catley's Middle-Earth album to death, and the lyrics to the song "City Walls" so perfectly suit the TT movie battle:
City Walls The lights go down to the deafening sound, Thunder clouds rolling in through the night My heartbeat pounds as the heavens resound In the wide invincible sky The lightning strikes from celestial heights Goes to ground and testifies, It's broken chains like symmetrical veins Crack the black terrestrial night The fortress walls face the numberless hordes Will they stand the test of time? The hourglass stands almost empty of sand Live or die on destiny's shrine. The cruel wind cries it incessantly whines In the face of the battle to come In strength and size this colossal divide Is a vast immeasurable one. The horns that sound strike fear in the proud But we're snared and there's nowhere to run, We'll live or die with heads held high Till the mighty victory's won The skyline cloaked by the blackening smoke That defies the naked eye, We stand our ground inextricably bound By the ties of friendship and pride. We flight the bow and wait for the archer's drum We strike the blow that's straight to the heart Our shields to the Hun We fight as we try to keep our dreams alive That history might recall Those who braved the kingdoms rise and fall Fought from the city walls Retreat or stand is the law of this land In the cold hearted thick of the fight And death's reign damned my superlative plans Making pyres of dreams and old times For Isengard cast flames through the heart Like the fireball crossing the sky The Helms-Deep walls lie breached, in the dark, As we stand defenceless inside The brave and pure for a moment stand sure Then to sanctuary we fly, The hordes can't reach, our impregnable keep Till the light of dawn when we ride We flight the bow and wait for the archer's drum We strike the blow that's straight to the heart Our shields to the Hun We fight as we try to keep our dreams alive That history might recall Those who braved the kingdoms rise and fall Fought from the city walls

Battle of Evermore is one of the hardest/fulfilling tunes I've had the pleasure of covering.
Rush's is GREAT! a personal favorite. Enya is not my style ... but that is her one tune i like. I'll have to check out David Arkenstone now.

No, not that! Not "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins"! Just when I thought I'd managed to forget it...
I had the mp3 on my computer at work (I have a work website)... You could hear the strangled screams and manic laughter every time someone listened to it. For even a worse time, I actually watched Leonard Nimoy performing that on stage. Alone on stage, with a guitar, one spotlight, then... Bilbo, Bilbo Baggins, only three feet tall! Somehow I've never managed to appreciate Spock after that moment ![]()

Another good one is 'Lux Aeterna' - it's a classical piece that played on the TTT trailer. If you can sit with it for 6 minutes, it's good stuff. But then again, you sat through a movie for 3 hours...

Enya does have a LOTR related one... It's quite obvious, too. It's from her 'Shepherd Moons' album- 'Lothlorien'
And that's the only reason I borrowed it from the library (*is not a big Enya fan*) ~Pip

Wow. I've only seen that video once, and now...I've seen it twice. Thanks, Evenrude!
I do have some comments about the video: First, the cute brunette with the pig-tails and yellow sweater ;the "dance" that the girls do looks like they're playing Gollum with a bad case of Misty Mountain cooties;some of them are wearing ears that are supposed to be hobbit ears I suppose, but look more like Spock ears-I wonder if the studio loaned them to Nimoy for the video shoot?;Lastly, the whole thing has a "Laugh-In" feel to it. Oh, the nostalgia. ![]() Way above, in a years-old post, there's a question about "Stairway to Heaven" and whether it's Tolkien-connected. In much the same way they do in mentions of ring wraiths in "Battle of Evermore," I think they do the same in STH. There's the lyrics "There's a feeling I get, when I look to the West and my spirit is crying for leaving" that recalls the elves feeling the call to leave Middle-Earth. Then the lyrics "In my thoughts I have seen, rings of smoke through the trees, and the voices of those who stand looking" that makes me first think of pipe smoke and then the Rangers guarding the borders of the Shire. Whether this is intentional or not, it sure calls Tolkien to mind.
